IPS Schools (Howe and Arlington) Treated Unfairly?
It seems Howe and Arlington might have avoided take-over by the State if they had been given the same treatment as Christel House by then State Superintendent Tony Bennett. The same rules were not applied to Christel House and thus Christel House stayed independent while the two IPS schools were taken over by the State. Read the whole story at the IndyStar.com and decide for yourself if this was fair or just another political move. http://www.indystar.com/article/20130731/NEWS05/307310091/Break-given-Christel-House-could-spared-two-IPS-schools-from-state-takeover

I sat next to the Howe student involved (in homeroom), very quite boy, seemed really nice. Kind of creeps me out now to think I was sooo wrong about him;however, I have my own theory on the stuff that happened(meaning his involvement-but still no excuse for it!)There was a book published on the murders.....His name was Richard Hobbs......the other boy that was involved was also involved in the Hollansworth (?) murders was Richard Coy, a Tech HS student. The other kids are all named in the book...some were Gertrudes kids and their boyfriends.

I remeber it because i went to school with some of the kids that did this awful thing.
My sister who had just gotten married lived on Grant by that old Dairy Bar, her mother in law owned it.

It is never to late for justice! Here is what I know about the Burger Chef Murders. A guy named Ford*****(last names not revealed)owed drug money to two brothers John & Daniel***** Because of this the brothers stole from Ford****** a green custom van and 38 revolver that was later used in the murders. The van was later torched. The 38 revolver was supposed to be thrown in the river but was instead sold to Jim *****. Jim ***** sold the gun to two brothers from Wanamaker named********The two brothers from wanamaker then used it to rob a bank and were caught. The bullistics traced the gun back to the Burger Chef Murders! The two brothers from Wanamaker were never convicted of the bank robbery because the police lost the gun in their custody! Losing the gun was either a cover-up or total embarrassment for the police department, either way the police never tried to convict John & daniel ***** :(

This is so weird. The first time I'm on this site this subject is on here. I remember this murder. I have tried to look it up online and have never been able to find anything. It was horrible and made national news. I beleive it was long before the Speedway bombings took place. Do you remember after the Burger Chef murders all fast food resturants installed peep holes in their back doors. It's true. We used to go to the Burger Chef at 10th and Arlington when I was a kid. I remember thinking it was there it happened. But it wasn't. Indianapolis had a bunch of sick murders around that time. I know every spring or fall farmers and hunters would start finding bodies. I also remember when game arcades starting spring up it added to the body count. Girls were getting picked up and killed. I had a friend who I will not mention out of respect to the family but his sister met her fate this way. I remember it was pretty sad. She was only a teen. Warrne Township. Anyway, if anyone has any reading to find on the net about Burger Chef I would like to see it.

You must be speaking of Susie Marion.
They convicted her killer (Bobby Ikerd)
And yes he met her at the Maddog Kazoo
arcade on the eastside

Wow, you got that one right. I think I was only about 10-13 at the time. Do you remember what year that was? I knew Johnny her brother pretty well. She had a younger sister as well. That was surreal. I remember when Johnny told us we just sat there in stunned silence. What do you say to that? Hard to get your head wrapped around that when you are a kid. Her killer's name soumds familiar. Was he a friend of hers? Did they burn him? I fn hope so. Like I said there were a few more that were raped killed or both around that time. There were a couple of girls picked up on east washington about that time. I cant remember if they were killed or not but they were hitch hiking home from a arcade when they were picked up. That was huge. Paper reported that for a while. I know they caught him as well. I used to hang out at one of those arcades that was located on shadeland ave. There were a lot of shady characters that floated in and out. I was just a kid but I remember thinking I didn't want to be there after dark.

Here's one for you. Do you remember the two teens who attempted to rob the savings and loan at 21st and arlington?

I never actually knew Susie but I knew
Johnny very well. My brother Kris used
to hang around with Johnny and his cousin
Steve Phillips.It was around 77/78 I was
an eighth grader at the time. I can't remember
the next Marion girls name but she was a sweety,
she married Joyce Dewitts brother...he was from
Speedway I think.I do not remember the robbery
that you speak of. I used to hang out at Quarterdeck
on Shortridge and Shadeland back in highschool.

We probably know each other. Were the same age/grade. I don't recall Kris but I didn't hang around over at Johnny's after 76, 77. Must have been 76 or 77 I imagine. His sisters name was "Pammy" Johnny was a pretty tough dude back in that day and I know each time I ran into him after that he was a harder and scarier person. He married a girl from my neighborhood, her name was Suzie something. The robbery I spoke of was when you and I were in 4 or 5 grade. A couple teenagers from my neighborhood walked over to a savings bank in Windsor Village with a 22 rifle and tried to rob it. They ended up on the roof and surrendered. They pulled about 8 yrs apiece. Crazy days for sure. I can't remember the name of the arcade w eused to hang at. It was at 21st and shadeland in the old Woolco/ Kroger strip mall. Probably around that 76-77 era. Pretty sure I went to Quarterdeck a few times.

It's been over 30 years since the Burger Chef Murders took place and a key piece of evidence was lost. Back in those days that would have blown the whole case, but I can't believe that theres not a box stored somewhere containing something from such a gruesome crime scene that could now be tested for DNA. They know the suspects!

Since they cleaned the resturant there was nothing left there I worked fast food before and when you clean it's typically spotless when your done. As for the woods, who knows. No doubt they are ahnging on to key details they wont release so if someone does come forward they can try and match a few things. But lets face it, if they had somethiing on someone it would be tested by now. I think all they have is air and a shameful investigation. Hey, the police pull this crap everywhere. When they screw up they bury it. It's more important to bury it than to admit to mistakes and continue on.

 • Sylvia Likens house

They tore down the Sylvia Likens house. I think that is a good thing. I wonder if people will forget what happened now. It was like a real horror story when I was a kid. She would have been like 60 if she had not been killed. A whole life lost.

They talked about putting up a plaque on the location (which might be made into a parking lot)and I think they should! I know there is a memorial over in the park on E. Washington St--but there still should be something at the actual site (well, in my opinion there should be) That was a very very very awful thing to happen to a young girl. I wonder how Gertrudes kids live with theirselves today? I wonder if it haunts them, or if they even think about it?

I'm sure that Gertrude's kids sleep just fine. They didn't care then and don't care now. Not to mention the other Monsters who took part. I'm sure they all found the God of thier choice and have forgiven themselves. There was never justice in the case. There will never really be peace. Destroying the house is a start. But no real remorse has ever been expressed. Gertrude blamed it on drugs and such. Never really saying I'm responsible i did it because I am an evil person. Just cop outs...They tortured and murdered that girl and never had to pay for thier crime.

No, no one truely paid for the crime.....thought Gertrude should have been tortured like Sylvia was.......but that would just pull us down to her level. Gertrude changed her name, moved...but died shortly after her release(how many yrs did she actually do?) Hobbs did time, then died from complications of his diabetes(I heard) Coy, served his time then went on to be convicted in the Hollingsworth murders (I think)..big surprise huh? Its sickening!

Hollandsburg murders were solved. The murderers were Roger Drollinger, Daniel Stonebraker, Michael Wright and David Smith.

I worked at Burger Chef at the time of the murders. I used to be a night closer. Against my parents' wishes, I would stop at my boyfriends apartment before I came home. I accidentally dropped my Burger Chef hat in the alley one night. It was turned into the investigators and my boyfriend and his roommate were questioned intensely about it. I had to go and identify that, it was indeed my hat. Needless to say, my parents found out about my midnight trysts with my boyfriend.

I hate to admit it but I am distantly related to members of the group who committed the Hollandsburg Murders. I have family buried in the Stonebraker cometary.

I've been collecting information on this case. Would you mind sharing the initials of the men they questioned?
